The South Carolina Cancer Disparities Community Network (SCCDCN) is a partnership between the University of South Carolina, State Baptist Young Woman’s Auxiliary of the South Carolina Woman’s Baptist Education and Missionary Convention, South Carolina Primary Health Care Association, and the Carolina Community Based Health Supports Network. Our goal is to reduce cancer health disparities.

For some time, we have known that African Americans in South Carolina fare much worse than White people (or European Americans) when it comes to cancer. Until now, knowing that these disparities exist has not always led to programs and services being offered that address the problem. It has not even led to asking good questions about why they exist. So, our knowledge is incomplete and our actions have fallen short.

By partnering with African-American faith communities in South Carolina, the SCCDCN aims to strengthen existing efforts and build new programs that help to reduce the gap. We also are committed to doing things that will last beyond the first five years of funding. We are committed to working together to increase community members’ skill level in the areas of grant writing, program development, and evaluation. This will help our partners secure funds for programs and services and further research in the many places where that is needed. With the resources provided by the National Cancer Institute, expertise of USC and the other academic partners (Clemson, Benedict College), and the enthusiasm of our community partners and community members, long-term changes in cancer health disparities in South Carolina can happen. We are committed to working together to get to the bottom of these problems and to finding solutions.

The SCCDCN is a program funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as one of 25 Community Network Programs of the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities.
