Presentation:  Assessing Psychosocial and Cultural Barriers to Colorectal Cancer Screening Among African Americans
Marcie Wright, PhD CandidateColorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer diagnosed and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Colonoscopy has been found to be an effective tool for the control and prevention of colorectal cancer, yet it is underutilized by African Americans (AAs). Consequently, AAs with CRC are diagnosed at late stages and suffer disproportionately higher mortality rates for CRC.

To successfully reduce the burden of CRC among AAs, a necessary first step is improved understanding of factors influencing AAs’ choices to seek and receive colonoscopies. As such, this study was designed to assess barriers to colonoscopy screening among AAs and to identify specific motivational strategies to increase AAs’ utilization of colonoscopy.
