Core Team
Purpose
The SCCDCN Core Team combines multidisciplinary professionals and
practitioners to link with communities, build partnerships, and guide
and improve community education, evaluation, and research initiatives.
The Core Team coordinates the efforts of each of the Network
subcommittees.

As a junior faculty member at the University of South Carolina
and 14-year resident of South Carolina, Dr. Adams has developed
a keen interest in cancer health disparities, particularly in
the area of breast cancer. Through her role in the SCCDCN, Dr.
Adams will focus her efforts on creating a mammography registry
in which she hopes to nurture a partnership with the African
American community that will enable her to ultimately develop a
research program that will be responsive to the needs of the
people that it seeks to serve.

Heather Brandt

Dr. Brandt has spent the past eight years working in cancer
prevention and control, specifically cervical cancer and HPV, in
South Carolina. One of her interests related to cancer
disparities is the intersection of cancer prevention and control
with cultural, social, and health literacy factors. She is
interested in community-based participatory research to
facilitate the community developing solutions to cancer
disparities. |

Ms. Drayton attended the University of South Carolina, where she
received a B.S. in Health Education. In addition, she earned a
Masters in Business Administration from Webster University. She
has completed Management/Administrative Certification
requirements for the Governor’s EXCEL Leadership Program.

Dr. James Hebert, Principal Investigator, is a Professor in the
Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the Arnold
School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina
(USC), and the Director of the South Carolina Statewide Cancer
Prevention and Control Program based at the Hollings Cancer
Center in Charleston. Dr. Hebert currently is principal
investigator on nine federally funded cancer-related grants and
several community participatory based research studies. Dr.
Hebert’s wealth of experience and commitment to the community
will provide strong leadership to the SCCDCN.

Dr. Rachel Mayo earned her undergraduate
degree in Natural Sciences and her Masters Degree in
Microbiology from the University of Arkansas and her doctorate
from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Mayo is an assistant
professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at Clemson
University. Her research interests are in Breast Cancer
Prevention and Control, Health of Older Women, Hispanic and
Minority Health, and International Health. Dr. Mayo’s teaching
interests are in the concepts of Child Health, Applied Health
Strategies, and International Health.

At the SC Primary Health Care Association, Dr. Young is
responsible for establishing and recommending policies and
procedures that develop organizational quality structure and
standards of performance. In this role, she oversees clinical
quality improvement initiatives, the Health Disparity
Collaboratives, and research initiatives.

Wendy McKenzie, the Coordinator of several breast cancer
research projects, Palmetto Women’s Health Study, the EASE
prostate cancer research project has recently focused her
efforts on recruitment issues and on retention of study
participants. As a member of South Carolina Cancer Alliance, Ms.
McKenzie serves as the co-chair of the Recruitment Subcommittee
of the Research Task Force. She has experience working with
multi-state NIH grants targeting women in rural communities and
has served as a peer reviewer of Department of Defense cancer
grant proposals. Being a breast cancer survivor, Ms. McKenzie
has led the efforts of several breast cancer community groups.
Ms. McKenzie will primarily be responsible for identifying,
surveying and convening meetings of the clinical cancer
researchers to determine issues, concerns and support needed for
recruitment of African Americans in cancer research protocols.

Lee Moultrie

Mr. Lee Moultrie is an independent consultant providing the
SCCDCN team with a direct link to the community. Mr. Moultrie
has an extensive background in networking and advocating for the
African American population in South Carolina. As the State
Chairperson for the organization National Black Leadership on
Cancer III, housed at Morehouse School of Medicine, Civil Rights
Activist and U.S. Air Force Desert Storm Veteran, Mr. Moultrie
has built strong relationships within the faith, political and
health care arenas of South Carolina. These relationships will
be serve as an asset to achieving the goals of the SCCDCN.

Dr. Pluto is Associate Director of the University of South
Carolina Prevention Research Center (USC PRC). She brings to
this project her experience as Co-PI of CENTERED
(Community-Based Evaluation Networks Targeting Elimination of
Racial and Ethnic Disparities), a joint project of the USC PRC
and SC state health department funded by the CDC, which
developed tools and strategies for evaluating community-based
efforts for eliminating health disparities. |

Ms. Dolores B. Scott, MEd, is the Health Ministry Director for
the State Baptist Young Woman's Auxiliary of the Woman's Baptist
Education and Missionary Convention, and represents the SC
Primary Health Care Association and the South Carolina
Department of Health and Environmental Control as the Director
of Hold Out the Lifeline: A Mission To Families (an interfaith
and interagency partnership). Ms. Scott has over 23 years of
experience working with the community regarding health and human
services issues, and has served as a partner with the University
of South Carolina on several Cancer health related projects in
the past. |

Dr. John Ureda, Dr.P.H. of Insights Consulting, serves as the
Co-Principal Investigator and consultant to the SCCDCN. Dr.
Ureda has many years of experience in health advocacy focusing
on building and evaluating partnerships between communities,
community organizations, and research institutes. He is
responsible for coordinating the State Baptist Young Woman's
Auxiliary of the Woman's Baptist Educational and Missionary
Convention and the South Carolina Primary Care Association in
their efforts to develop, implement and assess evidence-based
cancer education and participatory research. |
Madeline Ward-Broderick

Mrs. Broderick serves as the Project Coordinator for the SCCDCN.
She has worked with underserved populations in South Carolina
for over thirteen years and served as the coordinator of the
Cancer Research Network. Her knowledge of South Carolina’s
systems and commitment to community empowerment together allow
for the development of a strong administrative foundation for
this community based project.
